For more than 30 years, the Lown Cardiovascular Foundation has been recognized as a world leader in promoting heart health. Through careful inquiry, education, communication, and global outreach, we promote a humane and cost-effective model of care that advocates prevention over costly, invasive treatments and restores the bonds of trust between doctor and patient. We believe that overcoming cardiovascular disease requires not just good science, but a strong dose of compassion and a commitment to prevention.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number one cause of death in the US, and is poised to claim that position on a global scale. According to a report published by the World Health Organization a full eighty percent of CVD deaths worldwide can be avoided through preventive medicine. Millions of lives and billions of dollars can be saved through such simple steps as weight control, exercise, limited salt intake, anger management, and tobacco avoidance. Through education, research, and communication, The Lown Foundation is committed to reversing this trend by promoting a better solution.

The Foundation draws its inspiration from the career and philosophy of its founder, Dr. Bernard Lown. A humanitarian and healer, Dr. Lown is recognized for his groundbreaking work on the causes and treatment of heart disease and cardiac arrhythmias and the development of the modern defibrillator and the cardioverter. But his most revolutionary contribution to the practice of cardiology may be his insistence that the patient – not the disease – must be the focus of every practitioner’s attention.

Our programs are supported by Crossword Solver and include innovative research projects, community-based health education initiatives and our global health communications program, ProCor.
